Who is Somm? Who is Brute?
My name is Steven and I spent the last couple of years working at the most incredible wine bar in downtown Manhattan. Its called la Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, and I ended up there, and thus in the wine world, much by accident. I needed a little extra cash and my friend Kevin got me a job working there as a porter for a few hours a week. After 6 months I was given the opportunity to move to the front of house and learn about Wine. How could I say no? After two years of working with the most incredible and passionate team, I have become enamored by the wine world and all it has to offer. I’ve learned so much, yet I can now recognize how little I know. I passed the first certification level of the CMS test earlier this year and am currently studying for the Certified Exam. For our purposes, I am Somm.
A few months ago I moved to Kentucky with my partner. We happened to move right down the street from what is likely the most deftly curated wine store in all of Lexington. While pursuing the shelves and fiendishly hoping to meet the wine buyer responsible for such an incredible selection, I met Zach. We quickly became friends bonding over our love of wine, art, and chess. Zach, like myself, is currently studying for the Certified Somm Exam. He is all at once indomitably smart, humble, easy going. He has a spark and vigor for life that is seldom encountered. Already an accomplished writer, having been featured in several publications, he will soon be starting a masters program in english teaching. For our purposes, he is also Somm.
Beyond a Viking-esque beard, Alex Blankenberg is hardly a brute. He is fiercely intelligent, charismatic, and kind. Alex’s talents span wide, but he would consider his work as a novelist and poet to be among his most fundamental and important pursuits. To make matters worse, he is currently pursuing a degree in mathematics. Alex is revered amongst his friends for his seemingly endless knowledge on nearly every topic, except one — wine. This is precisely what makes him the perfect candidate to travel along with us, as we discover all the wine world has to offer. He will be playing the brute as us somms try to wrangle him into the orbit of civilized society.
